Am I a good candidate for fractional CO2 laser procedure?
If you are in good general health and are concerned about the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, or pigmentation irregularities, you may be a good candidate for fractional CO2 laser therapy. Patients who should not undergo CO2 laser treatment include pregnant women, those on medications that increase photosensitivity, those undergoing chemotherapy, or those with bleeding disorders or scarring. During your consultation, we will thoroughly review your medical history to ensure your candidacy.
Advantages of fractional CO2 laser
Fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing at Toronto Plastic Surgeons is far more effective than any topical skin care product available. CO2 laser can have the following advantages:
Reduces wrinkles
CO2 laser skin resurfacing stimulates collagen production in the skin and causes continuous rejuvenation for several months after treatment. The result? Firmer, firmer, younger looking skin.
It evens out the color and texture of the skin
CO2 laser treatment can improve your skin’s texture and tone by treating irregularities on your face while minimizing hyperpigmentation and brightening your skin overall.
Heals skin damaged by the sun
Fractional CO2 laser treatments can reduce sun damage and the sun spots that often accompany it (also known as age spots, dark spots, or liver spots), as well as remove birthmarks or moles.
scar
Skin peels work to reduce deep acne scars and create an overall smoother texture for the skin. By removing the top layers of skin, lasers can reduce the size of the holes or scars left by these scars.
Risks and complications of fractional CO2 laser
Fractional laser treatments are usually well tolerated and side effects are rare. However, like any other method, there are some risks. These include:
Redness, swelling and itching: After treatment, it is normal for the skin to be red and warm for a day or two. However, in some cases, this is accompanied by itching and swelling. In rare cases, this can take several months.
Infection: Fractional laser can sometimes lead to infection (bacterial, viral, or fungal), such as herpes virus flare-ups in those who are carriers.
Changes in skin color: Fractional laser can cause hyperpigmentation (skin darkening) or hypopigmentation (skin lightening). These problems may be treated with topical products or further laser treatments.
Scarring: Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing treatments also have a low risk of scarring. We will assess your risk level during the consultation and advise you accordingly.
How is fractional CO2 laser performed?
Fractional CO2 laser treatments send microscopic columns of laser energy through the skin into the dermis, where the heat stimulates the growth of new collagen and elastin. This growth appears after the procedure in visible improvements and tightening of the skin. Laser light also works to smooth lines, wrinkles, and scars, and to remove brown spots or other irregularities.
Fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing affects only a portion of your skin with thousands of tiny microscopic laser heat channels. Areas left untreated form small “bridges” that act to speed up the healing process. This is why this advanced technique is far superior to traditional C2 treatments in terms of healing!

Weeks 1-2: Most improvement occurs in the first week. By the end of week 1, you can expect to resume your normal activities, but for some, downtime can be up to 2 weeks. Patients are advised to avoid makeup for the first week if possible.
Week 3: After two weeks, you can expect an almost complete recovery. Your skin will continue to make collagen over several months, but it will look normal again by week 3, which is when patients usually feel most comfortable resuming exercise.
1 month post: Expect to see real improvement in your skin after 4 weeks. At this time, if necessary, we may recommend that you take the next treatment in your treatment plan as discussed in your consultation.
